What I’ve learned over the years is that there are two types of people navigating digital. Those who see an algorithm change or a new feature rollout who TOTALLY EMBRACE IT and those who wait until they absolutely HAVE to make a change.
Remember in 2015 when marketers everywhere were perplexed and confused by Facebook launching it’s “Conversion Pixel”? Before they did, we were messily trying to track and determine the success of Facebook ad strategies with very little accuracy…
What I remember is the number of people who waited to implement their pixels until they absolutely HAD to… who were unable to track or remarket as effectively because they hadn’t taken the few minutes to get on the bus IMMEDIATELY.
Well across the board, analytics have come a long way since then. Not only do all self-service advertising platforms have their own tracking pixels (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google) but we have a whole host of different analytics tools at our disposal – and this week it just got better.
Last week, Google unveiled Google Analytics 4 (or GA4) which comes with a whole host of new tracking features – most notably a whole lot of improved auto-event tracking making it much simpler to view on site and even off-site behaviour (like when users are clicking off your website to another site, which was always quite the nightmare to track previously). This move is no doubt coupled with the changes we’re expecting to see with third party cookie blocking next year (already rolling out now) – but whatever the reason, this little data driven marketer couldn’t be happier to have more free measurement tools at our disposal.
I’ll be learning the ropes and sharing all my learnings with you as I learn more (be sure to sign up for my 5 Minute Friday email tutorials if you want to stay in the loop with that) but today – the priority is to help you install this tag on your website immediately!
It took me a hot minute and a few forums to work out how to implement this in Australia – since Google’s instructions appear to be aimed at markets it’s prioritising – but I got there! So I wanted to make life easier for all Aussie data driven folk by throwing up a super simple 5 minute tutorial.
Find the video here or embedded below and again… don’t be that person who didn’t take the few minutes to install this super useful tool right away. You’ll be kicking yourself when your competitors are already able to optimise their strategies and take advantage of the data insights they’ve gained, simply by starting their tracking earlier.
Make it happen now! Having trouble? Slide into my DM’s on Instagram or LinkedIn and I’ll do my best to help.
